Approach to the Elective: We have designed the elective to give you a broad overview of different Women’s Health Clinics and issues. The clinics were chosen based on recent resident feedback. Many are new and existing clinics have been re-organized.

Course Details/Requirements: You are expected to be on time for all clinics and prepared to work with a variety of electronic medical records and other healthcare professionals. You are expected to see the patients on your schedule. A Medical assistant will be present for all the breast and pelvic exams you perform. You will complete a pre and post test on the rotation.

Clinics: Benign Breast Clinic, or Pap Smear Clinic, occur on select Wednesday afternoons. Gynecologic Procedure Clinics occur on Tuesday afternoons at Uptown.

Provided Materials: You will be provided with a copy of the most recent pocket-sized edition of “Managing Contraception”, the most recent “ASCCP Pap Smear Algorithms”, a color-coded copy of the “CDC Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraception”, a laminated CDC vaccine handout, a 2015 CDC STI Treatment Guideline, and a handout on speculum sizes. A syllabus is provided electronically so you can download it onto your own computer. A copy of the 1995 coding guidelines will also be provided for your use in clinic.

Audiovisual Materials: It is recommended that everyone watch the DVD “The Pill” produced by PBS, detailing the social and medical history of the birth control pill. There is a contraception quiz from the Managing Contraception authors that is helpful also. Watching the ASCCP Colposcopy DVD is strongly recommended.

Optional materials include: “Hope Springs” , about sexual dysfunction, “God’s Offices”, about a French Family Planning Office with a mixture of Muslim and Parisian patients, “Choices of the Heart”, about Margaret Sanger, “The Magdalene Sisters”, about adolescent sexuality and pregnancy in Ireland, and “Philomena”, about the long term consequences of managing adolescent pregnancy in institutional ways. “Vera Drake” set in post WWII Britain deals with how abortion was accessed differently for for upper and lower class class women with resulting difference in risks. “4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days” deals with abortion in Romania when contraception and abortion were illegal. It is an intense experience. “No Woman, No Cry” deals with maternal mortality worldwide. There is also a segment from “Sixty Minutes” on “Plan B”.

There are 5-10 minute procedure DVDS on most gynecologic procedures performed in clinic, including IUD insertions, colposcopy, vulvar biopsy, decision of Bartholin Gland Cysts, and endometrial biopsies. You should plan on watching these before your first procedure clinic. Nexplanon placement requires attendance of a 2 hour training class before the rotation begins by FDA regulation.

Feedback: We give a team evaluation at the end of the rotation. We strive to balance service and education on this outpatient rotation.
